After eight years as Director of the Edinburgh International Film
Festival (1973-1980),she spent two years as Director and Curator of
Film at the Pacific Film Archive,University of California,Berkeley.
On
returning to the UK in 1982,she spent a year as Film Consultant to
Channel Four,and then moved to work as a producer with David Puttnam’s
Enigma Films,where she produced Defence of the Realm (1985).She
was appointed Senior Vice –President at Columbia Pictures (1986-8)
followed by two years at BBC as Commissioning Editor for Drama,dealing
with all independent drama and with BBC’S feature film production.
After co-producing Alan Parker’s The Commitments in 1990,she worked independently as a producer,making The Snapper,The Van (both directed by Stephen Frears),The Life of Stuff and When Brendan Met Trudy for BBC Films.
She also co-produced Chen Kaige’s Killing Me Softly for the Montecito Picture Company.
From
1990-94,she was also co-founder and Co-Executive Director of the
East-West Producers’ Seminar ,a training programme for young producers
in Eastern Europe.
With Michael Pye,she is the co-author of The
Movie Brats,published by Faber & Faber. For the last nine years,she
has been involved with the Internationale filmschule in Köln as a
mentor for the International Producing Course. For the last seven
years,she has been a board-member of ACE,and was the first Chair of
Women in Film and Television in the UK.
She is also currently
Head of the Fiction Direction department at the National Film and
Television School in the UK and continues to work as an independent
producer.
